5 Common Hashtag Mistakes You’re Probably Making.

Gone are the days when you can just hashtag #food or #home and expect results. Oh no, no, no. You need to be creative with what you hashtag. #Food for example has over 349 million posts, so the chance to be seen is extremely unlikely and when we’re tryna run a business, we don’t need those odds! Using hashtags properly is so important and I think it’s easy to forget about the power of hashtags so here’s a few hashtag mistakes you are probably making and how to avoid them.

  1. ACTUALLY USE HASHTAGS.

Shock horror but yes it’s a good start to use them! Hashtags can improve your Reach and Engagement dramatically. Appearing high up on a hashtag means your content is more likely to be discovered by new people. So don’t just forget about hashtags or not use them, they’re really good tools for growing your Instagram account and will help you attract new people. You can use up to 3o hashtags on a Instagram post so utilise that.

  2. DON’T USE GENERIC HASHTAGS: #SHOES, #NAILS, #FOOD.

#Food, for example, has over 349 million posts. As it’s such an active hashtag this means the chance for our content to be seen is extremely unlikely due to the volume of content already on it. But #huffpostfood, for example, has 135k posts so by using this hashtag our content has a better chance of being visible! So the higher the chance your content has to be seen means the higher the chance new people will stumble across your account and hopefully engage with it which means more followers and hopefully more business. Phew.

  3. HAVE A HASHTAG BANK.

We’ve all had the panic of posting something to Instagram then going ‘oh crap what am I gonna hashtag?!?!’ it always feels like such a chore and that’s where the mistakes happen. We can’t be bothered so we either don’t hashtag at all or we use ‘#yoga’ and expect results. So a way to avoid this is having a Hashtag Bank! I use the Notes on my iPhone where I’ve got a whole list of them, ready for me to copy and paste over to Instagram.

  4. MIX UP YOUR HASHTAGS.

Yup Instagram love to make us work for our content, so mixing up your hashtags will help your posts do better. Instagram don’t like spammy or unrelated content. So get that Hashtag Bank going filled with a variety of hashtags.

  5. ENGAGE WITH THE HASHTAGS YOU USE.

If there’s a hashtag you particularly like or regularly use, search that hashtag and find 5 pictures you like and most importantly comment on them. You’ll see the return to you. This way we’re all helping each other grow and if the Insta gods think your post is popular, it’ll appear higher on the algorithm which means more engagement.
