Harley's Weightloss Journey And How We’ll Manage It This Winter.

Did you know that most of the UK’s dog food is made up of waste products, mystery fillers and preservatives just to ensure a long shelf life? And did you know, for a tin of dog food to be labelled as ‘with chicken’, it only needs to contain 4% of it? It’s incredibly hard to sithe through all the food on the market and find the right one for you and your furry friend. Especially if like me, all you want is honest food that will keep your dog happy and healthy. So when Butternut Box contacted me back in July to try a free box, the timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

Around the beginning of this year we noticed Harley was getting rounder by the day. It was the Christmas period, we were eating more so he was eating more. He got treats and all the left-over chicken from our roast every Sunday. His harness was getting too tight for him and we even had to loosen his collar a few notches. So we took him to the vets where - to our shock - he was almost 14 kg! Our vet said to whack him on a diet straight away and of course, no more treats.

We switched up his diet with what the vet had prescribed which was Metabolic food, she said that it’d be boring and tasteless but it’d do the job. And it did! We noticed he was losing weight really quickly. But it wasn’t a long-term solution, we needed something that would maintain his weight after he had lost the pounds he needed. It was finding food that was actually good for him, food he would enjoy and food we could trust.

Butternut Box is fresh, home-cooked dog food that is sent to your door. Using fresh ingredients, every meal is made from 60% of human-grade meat with no added grains. It’s so good, you could eat your dog’s dinner yourself. By filling in a few questions, they can work out how much food your pup should be eating each day. So every pouch is perfectly portioned for your doggy’s daily calorie needs, no more over feeding and no more measuring. Even better, you could pay as little as £1.60 a day for a small dog like Harley.

5 months have flown past and we’re still using Butternut’s services because it works so perfectly for us. The food looks colourful, fresh and it’s clear to see that it must be pretty tasty! Harley’s face lights up when he knows its meal time and gets extremely impatient when I can’t put his bowl down on the floor quick enough. I get reminders every 21 days when his next box will be arriving and it comes straight to the door, so I don’t even have to think about it. The food can last inside the box for up to 24 hours, so you don’t even need to be home to accept the delivery. I then unpack it all and pop a week’s worth in the fridge and the rest in the freezer. It’s as easy as that.

Harley is now an amazing 12.5 kg so this winter, we’ll be continuing with Butternut and this time laying off the left-over chicken…
